It was on the evening of Germanys crushing defeat of the Australians. Pete the manager of Champs bar did a shout out pleading for any assistance to the thumbs journey to S.Africa. Well, the help came in the form of Darryl an affable chap who simply walked over and said, "I will fly both you boys there....on me." (Apparently I had romanced him over a few ales the previous night with the humanitarian side of the project, not knowing that he had a few bob in his back pocket!)
"These flights are on one condition" he said."I will fly you to Windhoek, capital city of Namibia, taking you boys beyond the rains and dropping you in the desert! 2000km from Cape Town...not direct to S.Africa." like me he didnt want the thumb to have an easy ride! My only concern was - is this still a hitch?
Siting in champs bar in a daze contemplating wether or not to accept his ridiculously generous offer I felt very overwhelmed. Darryl just there whilst laughing his head off reassuring my mind...“It is still a hitch lads. I’m offering you a lift!”
With no direct flights to from Ghana to Namibia we ironically, over a 24hr period flew from Ghana to Nigeria to get a connecting flight to JoBurg (where the bloody world cup was in full swing, peeps everywhere draped in flags from all over the world!!) only to catch a flight back up North to central Namibia!! The thumb likes a challenge!

Daryll is the MD of A2EX a consultancy company which helps implement a varied host of professional set ups bringing underdeveloped countries in line with the rest of the world. Boosting their general standards of business practice and in turn boosting their economies. This man obviously has a heart of gold and was more than happy to fork out the 3000 dollars for the cost of the two air fares for the magic thumb.
(I also must mention Samuel (best driver in Ghana). A splendid and beautiful young lad and now a friend for life. We also had the privilege of meeting his pregnant wife, Sylvia and his sisters young family.
