Arthur Woke up to clear sunny skies, morning was spent up at the front of the ship. It is beyond imperative to capture some whales on film! In blissful silence, stood just in front of a 12 story wall of containers, the head poised forward, scouring the deep blue for hours on end. All that was seen...a jelly fish and a piece of driftwood.
This afternoon had me ordering 5 of the crew about for a filmed report on Arthur. Their patience was tested as I marched them round the gym, cinema room, library etc etc...demanding thumbs out with canned, cheesy, smiles. I had 1 hour to do it in, the real smiles came once they could skedaddle.
Since Day 2 aboard Arthur a serious concern has loomed over The Magic Thumb and Maersk. U.S port officials who had been informed prior and sanctioned this unique...case of a civilian disembarking off a container ship in Seattle, decided to change there mind after re- accessing policy. They informed The Thumb and Maersk I would be deported back to England if I tried to get off in Seattle. The Captain and I were in constant chat regarding how best to appease this situation, as reams of text from all sides had to be deciphered. Within it all there must be a viable solution. The Captain was amazing, Maersk were amazing, I was grateful and the U.S were obeying rules. One word seems to be the cause of this -'signatory carrier'. It is open to interpretation, yet leans toward scary fortress -esque over the top security measures to me. There is no protocol for this type of scenario, which in turn produces a lot of confused brains. 5 days of speaking to Interpol, the foreign office, consulates from both Blighty and the U.S etc etc. This pickle needs 5000 words at least to explain properly. In short, all boils down to the immigration officers who board the vessel in Seattle port. As they thoroughly check everyone aboard Arthur, the mood of that officer when it's my turn to step into the Captains office to be screened, will be very important!. Maersk were fined $700 dollars...I felt responsible, the fault in this process lies within a U.S administration flaw. The Thumb and Maersk have dealt with it as comprehensively as we could... I have decided to blank it from the mind. The Thumbs new camera lady flew into Seattle yesterday morning, our timescale is ridiculously tight to get down to Brazil for the World Cup. The Magic Thumb 'MUST' get off Arthur in Seattle.
All was steady as Arthur continued down the west coast of Canada.
