I arrived at the Kazakhstan Embassy with 4guysinacar at 2pm, pick up visa at 3pm. China insists any foreigners driving through its country must be accompanied at all times by a guide. This guide was called 'Louie' and it was 'Louie' who was taking up my spot in the guys Land Rover. So the Thumb followed them in a taxi to the highway toll gate, made arrangements to meet on the Kazakh side of the border... as, when and if all ran smoothly. No operating phones, Internet or knowledge of our rendezvous point would make this tricky.
It's 600km to the border, I have 5 hours to do it in.I failed. I got a lift 300km right off the belt in another brand new Landrover, then another lift 100km off a rickety lump of a truck. I got dropped off in a right dive of a truck stop around 10pm. It wasn't a threatening dive but the folk were less than friendly, I had some noodles in the station canteen whilst getting intensely stared at by all who wandered through the door. No luck with lifts...things are different when its dark. I was in the middle of nowhere, resigned to sitting it out all night in the canteen, I made a quick 'shot in the dark' inquiry about a room.
15 yuan/1 quid 50... one of the filthiest, disgusting holes of a room I have ever seen, riddled with mozzys , fag buts, empty beer cans... crap sloshed on the walls. Purely and laughably bad.
I draped my clean sheet out over the bed and Cocooned myself in a quite genius rig up. With the mozzy net tucked under the feet end of the bed legs, the centre point of mozzy net secured at the top of my extended camera tripod, which was placed on a table close to where ones head will reside, using the rucksack as a counter weight. The head of my guitar leaned on the bed adjacent to the tripod topping off aforementioned Cocoon. I then turned the light off and went about ceasing to exist.
