If a captain allows you on his vessel- then that bypasses all shipping agency rules...how to get to the captain is the key. Port Authority and everyone else were not budging on giving out the captains phone no. of the massive 'Wheat Cargo Vessel' docked in berth five.
Despite the train tracks, trains, massive cranes and daunting security signs with 'prosecution' on as well as workers buzzing about on lollops etc.I thought if i just waltz in, and make my way to the main leading walkway of the ship I might have a chance. I am quite good at this sort of thing...I studied the path of least resistance through the fencing as I did a few laps. Without a second thought I make my move looking no one in the eye, with a confident route one style pace, I was spitting out the Wheat flakes that were floating everywhere as I waited for the Train to pass, onward past the massive hangers and through 2 mountains of wheat...through a gap in some porter cabin offices, a hop over some railings...a raised arm to say hi to a lollop driver who looks at me funny and on to the unmanned gate leading up to the walkway over the water and onto the ship.' Champion' I am on...2 guys peer down and shout "who you looking for"...."Raymond" I shout as I head inside to be greeted by someone...all high viz zed and helmeted up, "wheres your helmet mate"..." I expected one aboard" I say...he leads me to the lockers and gives me my helmet..."Where can I find the Captain" I ask..."he gets back this arvo mate". And that was that...I then went into the offices and tried to talk to management...who treat me the same as the Shipping agencies. I head back along the coast to Shadow.
Peter makes a beef stew with a Malaysian concoction of vegetables...as we watch the amazing footage of the Queens Jubilee with that flotilla on the calm waters of the Thames, a far-far cry from what we were experiencing on the high seas at that time. I play Peter 'Joseph Lochs','hear my song' on you tube...he loves it.
