Day 82 - Tonio pushed on through the night. As the sun was dropping...the scenery again was off the chart, for at least a 100km the roadside looked like dozens of super giant mammoths had all slumped together and fell asleep. Massive furry mountains is exactly what it looked like...honestly!
As darkness began to fall so did the rains. Tonio just drove and drove sweeping through Mexico's beautiful ever changing dramatic landscapes, from cacti, arid desert conditions to dense jungle in a matter of hours. The air quickly changing, hanging thick with the scent of abundant life...big fat, dense green foliage bursting out everywhere...superb stuff.
Pulled the camera out to film a family piled into the back of a truck as we drove past, they all manically screamed as I waved at them pointing the camera...either I was pulling one hell of a stupid face in my effort to multitask or they thought I was gonna gun them down. No one was hurt.
Hurtling through Mazatlan, Ruiz, Tepic and Zapopan...Tonio just kept on driving, we didn't know where he was heading and didn't care, Guadalajara, Leon and on and on...finally we reached Salamanca around mid day. With a fond, fond adios the Thumb was back out.
Approaching the beyond enormous Mexico City, with over 22 million peeps, it was definitely a case of avoid at all costs. You can get seriously stuck in a city of this size. Enter Alfonso...who convinced us not to take the road round but the road through. Alfonso managed this by generously arranging one of his drivers to liaise with us somewhere in the city and drive through it, giving us the chance to get a taste and film it etc, to then drop us right on the outskirts, bang on the road to Puebla which is where the Thumb is heading.
After being stuck in gridlocked traffic for 10hrs the Thumb was regretfully out in a gas station around 12pm, livid with the clanger and still well within the confines of this Mega Mega city...there were no signs of its end. judging by the endless street lights forging off into the horizon there wasn't one.
An off duty policeman...cooler than cool picked us up dropping us a little further out, he kindly advised we get a hotel because of the volatile area we were to be plonked. It quickly became apparent that said hotel was a sex den, I've slept in a few but this one had a wide open bay window for fellow peeps to peer in on whatever ceremonies are going on inside...classic and novel. It had a shower and bed... More than enough. All was good in the hood.
