Day 106 - Visited a few of the official merchants today, turns out no one of authority is ever present. Bemused looks, a lot of 'No's' and "go to Panama City" was all that was achieved. It's looking like we might have to take the search for this elusive vessel further down the coast to Portbelo.
The Magic Thumb has teamed up with the brilliant new social network Activitypal, there is a great synergy we share in ethos...get amongst it all, find some new pals, and share interest or activity with someone new. Hence we hit the streets to do just that.
All sorts of rustic joy plays out in the nooks and crannies of Colon, kids kicking footballs round in every open space, the old boys slapping down dominos on every street corner, draught boards laid out on knees and milk crates...peeps preening, peppering the sidewalks. Colon is alive!
Being quite obviously 'not from around these parts'...eyebrows frequently raise. A young lad around 9 or 10 years old seemed to be holding his own on a draughts board with one of the elders. Keenly watching the form the thumb poked his head amongst the huddle asking for a game. This young kids face was a picture of total astonishment as I pulled up a chair and sat opposite him, he was totally gob smacked. Despite his face displaying a hilarious 'what the hell's going on here' he was eager to have a game. Draughts has different rules in Panama...I got trounced! I didn't want to argue and was certainly more entertained by the kids steely determination to win above all else, the older boys were catching the same laughs.
A 3-0 humiliation was followed by a good sit down with the local gang as I told them about why we were hanging about in there hood..." Go to Portbelo" they all said.
So we did.
